Drawing Gallery

One of the first art books I bought as an adult was The Modern Drawing – 100 Works on Paper from The Museum of Modern Art, compiled by John Elderfield, and published by Thames and Hudson in 1983. It is still a favourite, although it’s pages are now yellowing and – it could be said – no longer particularly ‘modern’; the two most recent drawings it contains are dated 1977, by American artists Jasper Johns and Richard Diebenkorn. I have always been fascinated by the many facets of ‘drawing’ – or the idea of ‘mark-making’. It is accessible as a medium to pretty much everyone. And pretty much everyone has at some point in their lives drawn. Each and every one of us makes a distinct mark. I remember an early life-drawing workshop I attended at which there were perhaps 60+ artists, and being astonished by the uniqueness of each person’s drawings.

I draw a lot. You can see some of my abstract and conceptual drawings in this gallery. For life drawing, head over to my Life gallery.
